What is ABA?
Applied Behavior Analysis, or ABA, is the process of systematically applying interventions based upon the principles of learning theory to improve socially significant behaviors to a meaningful degree and to demonstrate that the interventions employed are responsible for the improvement in behavior (Baer, Wolf & Risley, 1968; Sulzer-Azaroff & Mayer, 1991). At Ability Learning Center, all appropriate teaching approaches based on the well-grounded principles of ABA are utilized.
Applied Behavior Analysis is the leading, research-based methodology proven to being about positive, meaningful change, in behavior in individuals with Autism and learning disabilities. Over the past 40 years, several thousand published research studies have been conducted validating the effectiveness of ABA across a wide range of:
Populations (individuals with mental illness, developmental disabilities and learning disorders),
Interventionists (parents, teachers, and staff),
Settings (schools, homes, institutions, group homes, hospitals, and business centers), and
Behaviors (language, social, academic, leisure and functional life skills, aggression, self-injury, oppositional, and stereotyped behaviors)
We work on decreasing inappropriate behaviors while increasing more appropriate replacement behaviors! We start by determining the function of the undesired behaviors, then teach the child functional communication or another appropriate replacement behavior. We develop an individualized positive reinforcement-based intervention plan. Parent/caregiver training is critical to insure consistency across individuals and settings.
Just as important as the ABA therapy we provide is the hands-on ABA training we provide to our parents. Parent training allows our parents to continue the progress at home and helps generalize the skills the children have learned. We have found that children progress more rapidly toward their goals when parents are involved in therapy. We love our families and the connection we can create together!
